The Honey Dewdrops -“I Don’t Feel So Young…”

The Honey Dewdrops are an acoustic singer/songwriter duo made up of Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish. I first met them about four years ago during one of our gigs at the Gravity Lounge, a former performance venue in Charlottesville, VA. About a year later, Morwenna and I asked them to share the stage with us when we released our CD “Chioggia Beat.” Since then we have become good friends, seeing them mostly at various festivals that we all have played, even though we all have lived in the same town for the past few years.

Laura and Kagey tour constantly throughout the U.S. and just returned from their first tour in Canada. They have released 3 albums, comprised of orignial music that often falls in the Americana and Folk genres. However, I feel that their music surpasses those boxed-in descriptions. They write wonderful stories and present them to listeners through beautiful melodies and harmonies. Their music reflects a diverse range of musical muses. I can remember many times talking to them about a variety of their influences and favorite musicians including Bill Frisell, Jakob Dylan, The Beatles, Sharon Jones, The Punch Brothers, and even Michael Jackson.

Many critics use the word “honest” when describing acts like The Honey Dewdrops. Maybe it’s because Laura & Kagey are writing songs that are accessible to everyone, but I think in their case they are writing about how they truly feel in their own lives. They are writing music because within them lies messages and stories that must be told. Even though they can write melodies and stories that stick in your head for days, I truly believe that it’s more important to them to share their “honest” music with you rather than being the latest popular indie artist.

The Honey Dewdrops will play The Southern Cafe & Music Hall this Friday, May 3rd at 8PM. Tickets are $10 in advance / $12 at the door.
