The first time I met Erin Lunsford was during a recording session which I was engineering. She was featured on about 3 songs and right from her first take, I was very impressed. When she records as a session musician, performs solo, or with her band, Erin & The Wildfire, her conviction with owning whatever she sings is truly evident.

For this session, I asked Erin to play a few songs and talk to the music students at The Renaissance School (a college preparatory high school for high ability students in the arts, sciences, and/or humanities). The school is in the heart of downtown Charlottesville and she kindly agreed to come by and do this session in the school’s theater a few weeks ago. Instead of my usual write up, I thought it would be interesting to add some of the students’ impressions of her visit below, but first, here is her beautiful version of the classic “Sitting on Top of the World.”

Part 1
: “Sitting on Top of the World” (Pt. 1 down below)

“I heard from other students that while Erin was singing they could hear every word very clearly from the top floor, even while we had the door closed. Her voice was very powerful to resonate clearly from the basement to the top floor without a mic.”
– Alex B.

“Erin has to now be one of my favorite singers since I have never heard anyone sing like her… The way she used volume in her song was just astonishing and now I have fallen in love with her voice.” – Clark M.

“I also really enjoyed just hearing about her life. She’s just a beautiful, cool and kind person as well as an amazing musician.” – Nellie B.

“I really enjoyed Erin’s visit to our class. She is a really talented singer. It was cool to be able to ask questions to a talented musician. She was really nice. Her voice was really impressive, really loud and powerful. I loved the song about her friend.”
– Olivia B.

Part 2: “Goodbye to Greenbank”

“Erin’s visit was fantastic. To start, her voice blew me away. Her emotion and passion were breathtaking. The warble she would do pulled on a little piece of me, made me really delve deep into the musical painting she was singing. Also her belting high notes really made the emotion she was emitting, peak in a very powerful way that I really only hear/feel in Adele’s songs. Another factor that she had that absolutely amazed me, was her stage presence. She had a very powerful and confident stance that I had never seen before. As soon as she walked into the room,  it felt like the show began. And when she started singing, all the attributes described earlier plus her presence, made an incredible performance. Lastly, her combination of guitar and vocal, was well balanced. Her guitar complemented her voice very well.” – Mattias Z.

“Erin’s visit was a great experience. What I got out of it was that I need to start practicing – singing and confidence- to rack up my hours, go to 10,000 and beyond.”
– Sana M.

“I agree with Ms. Mitchell when she said how easily her lyrics were to hear. I think she might be one of the best singers I have seen live… Erin is very inspirational, following her dreams. I think if more people did what they love, life would be more enjoyable…” – Vince M.
